NOTE:    Regular season league rules will apply.  Seeding based on regular season standings.

Highest seed based on points scored in the round robin is home for all playoff round games.

                Scorekeepers failing to show for their scheduled games will forfeit 5 points for their team.

Round Robin pts. for  playoff round seeding: Win = 75 Pnts.  Tie= 50 Pnts.  Loss = 25 Points +/- Run differential, with a max of +/-20 Runs.  Default win = 85.

Please remind your team about the Pot-Luck League Banquet at Sunnyside Hall (Cloverdale Arena) – 6:30pm Monday (Aug 24th)!  Arrange to bring an assortment of food enough for your delegation.

2009 Tournament Rules

Same rules as the regular season:

  • Softball Canada standard rules, with exceptions noted below;
  • Match +2 HR limit – Teams can’t get more than 2 over-the-fence HRs more than the other team’s total.  Ex. If the visitors have 2 HRs, and the home team hits their 5th, that hit is a single.
  • Teams should field a minimum of four women, but can play with three and a phantom out in the batting order.  Maximum of six men in the field.
  • Safe-bag and commitment line, runners must not step on home plate, force-out at home after crossing the commitment line (no tags in that zone);
  • Sliding is not allowed (runner would be out);
  • Bunting is not allowed (batter out and a dead ball);
  • Infielders must remain behind the base lines until the ball is hit.
  • Pinch runner is allowed from home if the other coach agrees; etc. as the regular season.
  • Overthrow out of play = two base award from when the runner was when the ball was thrown.
  • If a batted ball hits a runner before a fielder touches it, the runner is out.
  • If the batter runs inside the baseline and interferes with a throw to first, they are out.
  • If a runner steps off their base before the batter makes contact, they are out (leadoff).
  • Outfielders and Rovers must stay 10 yards / 30 feet back from the baselines until the ball is hit.  Only the 4 infielders may be inside that imaginary line.
  • Mercy rule – Max 10 runs per inning – 7th inning is open only in the semis and finals.

Round Robin games Friday night and Saturday morning:

  • Games are 5 innings max, and in the round-robin no inning may start after ten minutes to the next game time.  This does not need to be announced before the inning, although if an inning in the 8:30 game started at 9:18 for example it would be assumed to be the last.
  • Season standings determine the home team.
  • Teams should identify their coach and one captain to the umpire.  Only those two individuals should discuss any call or ruling with the umpire during the game.
  • Scores are delivered to the Central Scoring table, where they will be converted into tournament points.  In the round robin portion, teams receive 75 points for a win, 50 for a tie, and 25 for a loss.  That score is adjusted by +/- up to 20 points based on run differential (which means if the home team is winning, they should still play the bottom of the last inning unless they are already up by 20.)  A default win is worth 85 points (75 + 10).  There is also a possible penalty of –5 points per official if teams miss their commitment to provide a scorekeeper at their assigned times on the schedule.
  • A and B side semi-finals will be seeded with the top four point round-robin totals from the round robin in the A semis and the 5th through 8th in the B semis.  Any ties there will be broken by head-to-head results (if any), then by score of opponents, and finally season standing.

Home Run Derby at lunchtime Saturday

  • Men’s competition at Diamond 3, Women at Diamond 2 (small diamond in between);
  • Up to 2 men and 2 women per team - Choose your pitcher;
  • Most home runs from 5 swings wins the trophy and bragging rights;
  • Foul balls, grounders, pop flies, line drives, misses and home runs all count as swings.
  • After two taken pitches, the batter must swing (or lose one of their five chances);
  • Ties are broken by additional rounds – players who are still tied advance.

Playoff Round Saturday afternoon

  • Semi-final games are 7 innings max, but again no inning will start after 15 minutes to the next time slot.  If there is a tie, extra innings will be played with a runner (last previous batter) starting on 2nd base each inning.  Round-robin standings determine the home team.
  • The A and B final games are seven innings with no time limit.  Extra innings will break a tie in the finals, again with the runner who batted last starting on 2nd base.
